Micro Irrigation

Micro-irrigation system is a modern method of irrigation. In this method we deliver water slowly. Usually delivered in the form of discrete droplets, continuous drops, streams, etc.

Micro Irrigation can be useful in undulating terrain, rolling topography, hilly areas, barren land and areas having shallow soils. Micro Irrigation system can be broadly classified into two categories: (1) Drip irrigation system (2) Sprinkler irrigation system

Benefits of Micro Irrigation

Micro-irrigation systems are popular these days for their low cost and water-efficiency.

It can solve irrigation problems due to lack of water and over-dependence on monsoon.

Drip irrigation being up to 90 percent more efficient than flood irrigation, water is conserved and optimized, and by being able to control, quite precisely, water application at the plant roots, crop yield is increased, resulting in an increase in profits.

There is also a reduced cost of cultivation for farmers who make cost savings – saving electricity thanks to reduced pumping, reducing the use of seeds via line seeding vs broad seeding, and reducing the costs of weed control.

Government of India Schemes for Micro Irrigation

The government of India launched a program called, ‘Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana’ more specifically, the ‘Per Drop More Crop’ component of the scheme focuses on micro-irrigation systems that promote precision farming by making water available in a targeted manner to the root zone of crops.

SwitchON Intervention

Most of the farmers  of Jharkhand face acute shortage of water and because most of them are marginal farmers, using an electric or diesel pump becomes very expensive and increases the input cost for cultivation, thus shifting to micro irrigation will be beneficial for them.

In this regard, SwitchON Foundation organized a Micro Irrigation Awareness program at Latehar district, Jharkhand on 23rd of May where 30 farmers were present. Out of them 10 farmers have already applied for micro-irrigation systems.

In Sahibganj district of Jharkhand, a micro irrigation and organic farming awareness and training program  was organized on 24th May.

The awareness programs conducted by SwitchON Foundation have already started creating a positive impact, with farmers showing interest and taking steps towards implementing micro irrigation systems. By embracing micro irrigation, Jharkhand farmers can overcome water scarcity challenges, improve their agricultural productivity, and secure a more prosperous future.
