Ranchi, October 20, 2023: Recognizing the need for a more sustainable approach to this year’s Durga Puja Celebration, SwitchON Foundation came up with the sustainable guidelines for hosting eco-friendly Durga Puja celebrations for the Puja Committees in Jharkhand. These guidelines are intended to empower Durga Puja organizing committees and the general public to embrace environmentally responsible practices during the auspicious festival of Durga Puja.

Various Puja committees like Panch Mandir Durga Puja Samiti, Harmu Colony, Ranchi railway Station Durga Puja Committee, Railway Station Road, LIG Durga Puja Samiti, LIG Colony and other Puja committees from Ranchi and Dhanbad joined hands to take part in this  year’s eco friendly Puja Celebration. Implementing partners like manthan Yuva Sansthan actively took part in mobilizing and reaching out to more Puja Committees encouraging them to adopt eco-friendly practices.

Durga Puja, a vibrant and significant festival celebrated with great zeal and devotion, traditionally involves elaborate decorations, processions, and cultural events. However, these festivities often result in environmental challenges, including excess waste generation, pollution, and resource depletion. To raise public awareness about the importance of adopting eco-friendly practices during Durga Puja celebrations, SwitchON came up with the sustainable guidelines for eco-friendly Puja Celebrations.

Mr. Vinay Jaju, Managing Director of SwitchON Foundation said, “Our aim is to preserve our culture while minimizing the environmental footprint associated with these festivities. We invite all organizing committees and the public to embrace these sustainable guidelines and work together for an eco-friendly Durga Puja.”

The Puja organizing committees are made aware to ensure the use of biodegradable & eco-friendly cutlery for the distribution of food along with potable water stations with reusable containers. Cultural events are organized about the importance of eco-friendly Durga Puja celebrations and the impact on the environment. Posters and banners on sustainable Do’s and Don’ts are fixed in the Pandal area. A special focus on the waste management with well labeled dustbins for dry and wet waste is ensured. Training is also provided to recycle the wet waste into composting.

Mr. Rajeev Kumar, General Secretary Pancha Mandir Durga Puja Samiti said, “This time we are giving attention to proper waste disposal during the Puja and even post puja. The wet wastes like flowers, leftover prasad and other biodegradable offerings would be used for making compost.”

Mr. Munchun Rai, President, Ranchi Railway Station Durga Puja Committee said, “We believe in responsible resource management for a better environment. We will make the public aware about the importance of resource reuse and inspire action at both individual and community level.”

SwitchON Foundation encourages Durga Puja organizing committees and the public to implement these guidelines to ensure a more sustainable and environmentally responsible celebration.
