Steel is all around us – from the bridges we cross to the homes we live in. But what if we told you that something as solid and essential as steel is also one of the biggest contributors to global warming?

Globally, the steel industry accounts for 7–9% of CO₂ emissions. India alone emits 242 million tons from steel production every year. And West Bengal? It produces 10% of India’s steel, with Durgapur, Asansol, and Burnpur as its steel powerhouses. That’s why, when we talk about fighting climate change, we can’t ignore this sector. But here’s the good news: change has begun.

Steel with a Purpose: Why Now?

The traditional way of making steel – burning coal in massive blast furnaces – is outdated and damaging. But shifting an entire industry isn’t easy. There are roadblocks: green hydrogen is expensive, infrastructure is lacking, and many manufacturers – especially smaller ones – don’t know where to start.

States like West Bengal and Jharkhand have the industrial muscle, the raw materials, and the people. West Bengal is connected to major ports, and with abundant ocean water, there is scope for green hydrogen development.

The question is – how do we unlock this potential?

Real Change Begins with Real Conversations

The Move For Earth Symposium 2025, SwitchON Foundation’s flagship event that brings together changemakers from every corner – industry leaders, policymakers, thinkers, doers, and dreamers.

At this year’s edition, we hosted a roundtable on Decarbonizing Industries and Corporate Responsibility as part of various activities of the symposium.  Three key reports were launched:

  • Sustainable Steel for Sustainable India PDF
  • Sustainable Steel for Sustainable West Bengal PDF

These reports are roadmaps – actionable blueprints for what a low-carbon future can look like for India’s steel industry.

Insights from the Roundtable at the Move for Earth Symposium, Kolkata

The roundtable sparked powerful conversations, with voices from across the industry sharing bold visions, honest concerns, and inspiring ideas. Mr. Debaditya Chakrabarti, Director,  Steel Re-Rolling Mills Association of India, Dr. Debnath Bera, Director, Ranchi Partners Management Consultants Pvt.Ltd. Prof. Niladri Chakraborty, Jadavpur University, Mr. Sabyasachi Sengupta, Principal Counsellor, CII, Dr. Suvendu Bose, Partner, Grant Thornton Bharat LLP, and Mr. Sudasatta Kundu, Nangia Anderson India Pvt. Looking Ahead

The future of steel in India doesn’t have to be a dirty one. With the right policies, technology, and commitment, we can build a sustainable steel industry that contributes to both our economy and the environment. The discussions at the symposium were just the beginning. Now, the real work begins – transforming these ideas into actions.

Let’s continue the conversation, share these insights, and work together towards a steel industry that serves both our planet and our people.
