From Rejections to Renewable Innovation
Nitish Kumar, a 35-year-old first-generation entrepreneur from Daryapur, Bihar, has transformed years of personal setbacks into a breakthrough solution for farmers battling post-harvest losses. In his flood-prone region, repeated monsoons destroyed banana crops and other perishables within days. With no affordable preservation technology, unreliable electricity, and no access to cold storage, farmers were forced to sell their produce at distress prices or watch it rot, losing both income and hope. Having faced over 15 rejections in government job exams and without any technical background, Nitish was determined to create a solution.
Through SwitchON Foundation’s innovation and entrepreneurship programs, he received mentorship, product development guidance, and business planning skills that helped him transform his concept into a viable enterprise. SwitchON also connected him to networks of rural innovators and supported his access to a ₹12 lakh grant from the NaaViC Agri-Business Incubation Centre, enabling him to refine his solar dehydration technology and scale production.
Transforming Post-Harvest Losses with Solar Dehydration
Today, Nitish leads Bhojpatta Agrepreneur, a ₹1.5 crore social enterprise producing Zero Carbon Emission Solar Dehydrators that generate 1.5 times more heat than conventional dryers without using fuel or electricity. Farmers now use these machines to dehydrate mangoes, turmeric, vegetables, mushrooms, and fish—earning up to ₹1,500 per day from produce that would otherwise be wasted. His model offers three years of handholding support, buy-back arrangements for entrepreneurs without market access, and a rental kiosk system for small farmers. From southern India’s fish markets to the Himalayan fruit belts, Nitish’s innovation is reducing waste, boosting incomes, and building climate resilience—powered entirely by sunlight and community trust.
