Workers on Cycle from different sections of the society took it to the street and gathered at the Biswa Bangla Gate today to celebrate the “International Day of Cycle to Work” and further promoting the rich ‘Bengali Cycle Culture’

In recent data released by the National Health Survey – 5, Bengal topped the state list with the highest percentage of cycle ownership and usage ( 78.9%) than any other state

Celebrating the day, 100 household maids popularly called as house help ‘Didis’, who ride their bicycles to work, gathered at the Newtown Biswa Bangla Gate on their cycles dressed in special sarees with Banners and Posters stating – “Cycle Amader Jibon / Cycle is our Life” . Speaking at the event, one of the Didi said “We are completely dependent on cycle for our daily commute to work as we cant afford expensive auto fare, beside it helps us to reach our destination quicker than other mode”

The event was supported by a large number of corporate workers and Housing Societies who also joined the celebration organized by the Kolkata Sustainable Mobility Network, initiated by city-based SwitchON Foundation.

One of the committee members of the housing society said – “We really think it’s a fantastic idea and will certainly adopt it with our societies. Our society will make sure that there are separate parking arrangements for cyclists within our complex”

Colonel Inderjit Roy from the Newtown Business Club attending the event said “We are committed to the cause of cycling t and happy to support and be part of this international initiative which leading companies encourage and support cycling. We have a strong network of companies and they will forward to  support the idea of building infrastructure in the form of bicycle parking, showers etc for  employees opting for cycling to work, thus encouraging cyclists to travel and celebrate the spirit of cycling.”

Speaking at the event from Biswa Bangla Gate, Vinay Jaju MD SwitchON Foundation said; “We are happy to see the  response and support from different corporates, housing societies and other working communities in the city. Today we ust celebrate cyclists who use cycles to work such as househelp, milkmen, delivery person and also encourage more corporates in promoting the Cycle to Work culture among their employees” He further explained that today’s event is largely to educate fellow cyclists on road safety guidelines, with an objective to enable them to cycle safely to work. “The event will enable livelihood cyclists to feel recognised for their efforts and inspire others to use cycles and see it as an alternative to motorized transportation.” added  Vinay Jaju.

The group plans to launch a year-long road safety campaign starting today; to sensitize cyclists and other road users to follow road & traffic rules and avoid any incidence.

International Cycle to Work Day is celebrated worldwide with an idea to promote workers to commute to workplaces via bicycles and put the emphasis on safety awareness for cyclists and other commuters. Meanwhile, Kolkata being one of the hotspots of cycling nationally is currently subject to witness ban for cyclists on the main arterial roads. Among those who had been largely affected are those livelihood cyclists who are completely dependent on bicycles for their daily commute. A large chunk of these livelihood cyclists are people delivering milk, newspapers, food delivery services and many employed in the informal sector have no other option but to cycle to work.

Despite the high number of cyclists in Kolkata, there is lack of proper infrastructure for cyclists which is often seen as the primary reason for the large number of deaths of cyclists in recent times.

Speaking during the event, an IT professional who rides to his office daily said – “Riding cycling to work, keeps me on time to office and back – as i beat the growing traffic and congestion. Cycing has  become a rage across the world and like me more people are cycling to work and not just for health. ”
