Flag off Move for Earth in Jharkhand to celebrate and inspire Climate Action

Ranchi, January 5, 2024: Smt Mahua Maji, MP Rajya Sabha  and Dr Joseph Marianus Kujur SJ ,Director,Head – Department of Research & Planning Ph.D , XISS, Ranchi flagged off Move for Earth movement, a six-day Cycle Yatra across Jharkhand to celebrate and inspire Climate Action by SwitchON Foundation today at Bapu Vatika, Morabadi Ground, Ranchi. The cycle yatra, which started from Olihantu, Khunti reached Ranchi today and will cover around 500 kms in Jharkhand passing through Ranchi, Ormanjhi, Ramgarh, Bokaro, Phusro, Dhanbad, Giridih, Madhupur, Deogarh, Jarmundi and culminating in Dumka on January 9, 2024.

Around 100 cyclists joined the cycle ride in Ranchi to inspire and celebrate climate action showing their support. Along with this a line of events were organised in Ranchi engaging youth, children and community people in collaboration with Manthan Yuva Sansthan and Cosmos Youth Club. The RTC Polytechnic students took a single use plastic drive in their campus to make it a plastic free zone by making the students aware to stop using single use plastic and adopt the principle of refuse, reduce and reuse for utilizing the resources efficiently. Along with this an exhibition on waste, painting competition, speech and quiz competition on the theme of environment and climate change were organised.

Mr Vinay Jaju, Co-Founder of SwitchON Foundation said “During my cycle yatra I am connecting with the farmers, women and youth of the areas to address the issues of sustainable agriculture, clean air, waste management and clean energy solutions. We are hosting a series of activities in cities, towns and villages across Jharkhand  to build resilience with future friendly skills, technologies and practices to mitigate the climate crisis our planet Earth faces.”  

Later at Ormanjhi, in RTC College, a host of activities were conducted in collaboration withRTC Institute, JSVK, Cosmos Youth Club, Urban Kheti, Shivaji Pratibha Vikas High School where Mr. Jaju along with fellow cyclists met the youth and encouraged them to be the catalyst of change. A training program was organised for the students on Solar water pump application and post installation maintenance to equip them with the latest technology in clean energy. Training on waste and air pollution was also organised where the students got insights of the impact of air pollution and waste in our lives and how we can tackle it at individual level. The event concluded with some cultural programs and prize distribution.

Present at the occasion, Dr. Mahua Maji, MP Rajya Sabha expressed, “It is really encouraging to witness such a great initiative by SwitchON Foundation to Move for betterment of the Earth, for amelioration of the climate change crisis. I congratulate SwitchON Foundation for taking up such a noble awareness drive.” 

Dr Joseph Marianus Kujur SJ ,Director,Head – Department of Research & Planning Ph.D , XISS, Ranchi said, “Eastern Indian states are among the most vulnerable states facing the Climate Crisis. The initiative is a great step toward mass awareness generation and It is an important step to highlight the urgency and need for action among masses. We stand together with SwitchON for this important endeavor for our environment”

The main motto of the ‘Move for Earth’ movement is to celebrate and inspire Climate Action with a purpose to build a smarter and brighter future for ourselves, our children, our farmers and life on earth. The whole movement would cover cycling over 4,000 km across different states in East India engaging Farmers, Youth, Government, Financiers, Technologists and Civil Society Organizations through its journey, and offer solutions to community-specific issues related to water, soil, energy and clean air, that are directly impacting the livelihood and health of citizens.
