SwitchON Foundation organised  a state-wide cycling event, ‘Cycle with Lights’ Parade to create awareness on the harmful effects of bursting fire crackers for the third consecutive time, this year. The aim of the parade was  to sensitise citizens about the harm firecrackers cause to the environment and public health. . The event, organised across 20 major cities, saw over 1000 cyclists which included people of all age groups.  Cyclists urged citizens to ‘Say No to Firecrackers’ while carrying placards, posters and banners and travelling the roads of the city on bicycles decorated with eco-friendly, battery operated, led lights.  The cyclists encouraged people to choose pollution-free  celebration options instead. The event received an overwhelming participation.  The participants were also seen raising slogans on air pollution and distributing leaflets on how to make the upcoming festival cleaner, safer and pollution free.  This year the participating cycling groups included the  Durgapur Cyclist Group, Howrah Cycle Arohi, Jalpaiguri Cycling Club, Kalimpong Cycling Association, Hooghly Imambara, Bandel Church Group, Argo Cycling team, Cycos, Cycle-Ops, Kolkata Cycle Samaj, West Bengal Cyclist Association, 2 Wheels Kolkata, Cycle Network Grow, NTFN, Parsec Racing Point Column, KCAA RJC, Dooars Trails, Cyclon Riders, Siliguri Cycling Community, Chakulia Youth Club, Burdwan Cycling Club and Pahchan foundation.

A very motivating fact  was the presence of cycling groups from far off cities like Kalimpong and Asansol.

Speaking at the event, Vinay Jaju, Co-Founder of SwitchON Foundation said, “This years event saw a huge turnout of cyclists urging citizens to say no to firecrackers, such large-scale awareness drives are needed to sensitise citizens on the harmful effects of air pollution from firecrackers; the air becomes unbreathable ..”

SwitchON Foundation appreciates and welcomes the high court order to press for a blanket ban on firecrackers in the future.  The agenda behind this event was  to raise sensitivity towards the pollution caused by bursting crackers and illustrate to the masses how the effect is not just immediate, but long term.   The pollution created by firecrackers also gradually degrades the ambient air quality over time. Many cities across Bengal already have high levels of Air Quality Index (AQI) and an increase in the pollutant level is seen during Diwali.

Participants at the ride were heard  saying “We don’t need fire crackers to have fun during Diwali, there are more sustainable ways of having fun.” Raghu Jana convenor Kolkata Cycle Samaj, said “In the light of Diwali, may our hearts be filled with good wishes for all. Let our society become aware of noise and air pollution”.

The goal of ‘Cycle with Lights’ is to draw common eyes towards the looming threat of air pollution and the plethora of ailments alongside the possibility of yet another public health crisis in the near future. “Your organization is doing a great job. I have visited so many places and the response is really good. Everyone really appreciates this event. Previously people used to cycle on a daily basis. But right now they are not that much active. Also there are so many restrictions. There’s no particular lane for cycling.

So after getting the idea of a cycle with lights, I went to the police station also. And they gave permission. So from Deoghar, the young generation will participate in this event. And I wish you good luck for tomorrow” said Sarla Karm, secretary, FB foundation before the event.

A participant at the event said “We are riding to spread Joy and not Pollution, so that our children can have a safe future. Festivals and spirituality should bring us closer to nature and not harm them”

The cyclists participating raised slogans like “Bengal loves clean air”, “Say no to firecrackers”. Dipayan Saha, of Sunrisers Siliguri at the event said, “Cycling does not only stand for fitness but an individual’s effort towards adopting a sustainable and environment friendly lifestyle. This Diwali, we want to propagate a sustainable and eco-friendly method of exploring the city’s hidden places and also, raise a voice against the use of the ever-polluting firecrackers in the city”.

Many doctors too have warned that the particulate matter and the toxic air released by firecrackers enters our lungs and bloodstream making it extremely dangerous. Debjani Lahiri, of NTFN Fitness Forum at the event said “Joining the cause towards a Smoke Free Diwali this year, in order to address the massive climate change which is happening globally,we are doing the least bit from our side by promoting to celebrate ‘Smoke Free Diwali’ (Saying No to Crackers) by using Green Commute in the form of Cycles”.

The whole event was part of a series of larger steps taken by SwitchON Foundation  to pledge for a cleaner and better air after Diwali and Kali puja celebrations, this year and beyond.
