SwitchON Foundation in collaboration with NABARD, NCDC and The Meghalaya Basin Development Authority, has been actively promoting and empowering FPOs in Meghalaya. Under the project, six FPOs have been identified in various districts of the state, focusing on crops such as ginger, turmeric, potato, temperate fruits and vegetables, and spices.

The objective is to enhance farmer capacity, ensure access to quality inputs and services, promote cluster competitiveness, and facilitate access to fair and remunerative markets. These initiatives will help to strengthen the livelihoods of small and marginal farmers, improve agricultural productivity, and contribute to the sustainable development of the agricultural sector in Meghalaya.

The Meghalaya Basin Development Authority (MBDA) also announced cash prizes to three Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) for the purchase of processing units. The selected FPOs, namely Mawhati Cluster FPO Cooperative Society Limited, Ka Thup ki Nongrep FPO Cooperative Society Limited, and U Shang ki Nongrep FPO Cooperative Society Limited, each received a cash prize of 58 lakhs for the purchase.

The cash prizes are aimed at supporting the FPOs in their efforts to enhance their processing capabilities. The funds will enable the FPOs to acquire state-of-the-art processing units, which will further strengthen the value chain and boost the overall quality of production in Meghalaya.

Additionally, the Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Shri. Conrad Sangma, awarded a turmeric washer unit to another FPO in Laskein block of West Jaintia Hills named Tylli Deimaia Joint Farming Cooperative Society Limited. This momentous occasion took place during the inauguration festival, marking a significant milestone in the promotion of turmeric cultivation in the region.

The collaborations with the Meghalaya Basin Development Authority and FPOs highlight the government’s commitment to promoting agricultural growth, fostering entrepreneurship, and empowering farmers in the state. These initiatives will contribute to the overall development of the agriculture sector, drive economic growth, and improve the lives of farmers and their communities.
