Cyclist marked the Durga Puja celebration with a trail across the Newtown – Bringing people and planet together

Kolkata, 30th September, 2022: Durga Puja celebration has just started, and SwitchON Foundation along with Cycle Group’ launched a special drive with cyclists riding to work and also household and livelihood cyclists riding for work,  today on the occasion of Maha Panchami.

It is the time of the year that puts the Celebration & Festival on the center stage, and Newtown Kolkata’s Cyclists are celebrating it in their own special way –  by acknowledging the service done by our househelp didis who ride their cycles ensuring they keep our homes clean and the city pollution and congestion free

Cyclists went on a ‘Pandal Riding ’ around Newtown spreading awareness about sustainable mobility and encouraging people to take up cycling to work. The cyclists were also joined in by house help ‘Didis’, who ride their bicycles to work. The message for citizens was clearly to take a vow this durga puja to come forward and adopt the cleanest mode of transport for a healthy and less polluted City of Joy.

The cycle rally with over 50 cyclists was organised under the aegis of  NKDA. The rally began at 6:00 AM early in the morning, starting from the Ecopark gate 4 via AJ block and continuing till the BL Block. It had the support of  Hon’ble Chairman of New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) Shri. Debashish Sen.

Speaking of the occasion, Shri. Debashis Sen, Chairman NKDA said “This cycle rally to celebrate Durga Puja is very special with a noble message encouraging people to come forward and adopt sustainable habits for future generations. ” He further added “Bicycles prove to be an important means of transport for health, livelihoods and a powerful reminder that not only do people care about the environmental issues we face, but when individuals unite, the power of the collective can create massive impact towards a safer and better future for all”.

Vinay Jaju, MD SwitchON Foundation said – “This Durga Puja let us reflect upon the changing times, and take a drastic step in making a shift towards Non- Polluting form of Transports” He further urged people to cut down on fuel run vehicles for pandal hopping this Durga Puja. “It’s about committing to take care of each other and our beloved city we all share. Lets walk and ride to pandals and enjoy the vibe of the city, all day public transport service is also available and must be availed, let the cars be at home, which will only crate congestion and pollution”

Recently, Kolkata has been ranked to be second most polluted city in the world. As the festive season approaches, there is increasing worry among environmentalists about increasing air pollution levels in the city, a significant part of which comes from the increasing number of motor vehicles in the city.

Representative of the Cycle Group, Two Wheels said “We want people to understand the challenges faced by lakhs of livelihood cyclists everyday in the city. With the existing ban on cycling in Kolkata’s main roads it’s impacting their livelihood and it’s high time that the ban must be lifted once and for all”
