SwitchON Foundation is launching a Solar Pump Technician Training aimed at imparting technical training on Solar Pumps under their sustainable Skill Development Programme. Keeping in mind the contemporary changes in training media, we have developed an online training delivered over e-platform. There are 3 stages of training on solar pumps:

  1. 12 hour (0.5 -1 Weeks) Introductory Online Workshop on Solar Pumps
  2. 50 hour (1 – 2 Weeks) Online Basic Training on Technical Aspects of Solar Pumps (Theory)
  3. 150 – 300 Hours (3-6 weeks) Residential Training with Practical Demonstrations

The workshop will be launched on the occasion of Teachers’ Day, i.e., 5th September 2021 via Zoom E-Workshop. The keynote speakers in the workshop would be Shri S S Arya, CEO, Agriculture Skill Council of India and Shri Adwait Joshi, CEO, CLEAN. The workshop agenda and other relevant materials will be shared with the registering participants. Each participant will be provided with a certificate from Skill Council for Green Jobs and SwitchON Foundation. Skill Council for Green Jobs is launched by the Government of India aligning to the National Skill Development Mission, and promoted by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

India is the second highest greenhouse gas emitter in the world. As an emerging economy, about 17% of the country’s GDP is attributed to agriculture. To combat the global climate crisis, the solar industry is a growing market with a demand for solar products higher than ever before. The Indian government has initiated the PM KUSUM scheme for solarisation of agricultural pumps, and has a target of installing 2 million solar pumps by 2022. To cater to this target, there is a limited opportunity due to inadequate skilled technicians for solar pumps. There is a lack of skilled technicians for renewable energy infrastructure installation and maintenance (solar rooftop and solar pumping systems). This limits the expansion of solar technology in many regions, especially in developing countries like India.

In the coming years, about 50% growth is expected in solar sector jobs. The training will promote uptake of solar irrigation systems by enhanced business activities. This has not only reduced air pollution by shifting from fossil fuels like kerosene and diesel to solar energy, but also enhanced income of trainees by placements and financial linkages for entrepreneurs.

The workshop designed by SwitchON launches with an online teaching workshop for 12 hours, which will include interactive classes with presentations, videos and online books. The training module has been designed such that participants can visualise the various aspects of the solar pumping system directly through Videos. The programme also includes assessment  theoretical knowledge development through extensive assignments.

Further, online training will be conducted online covering the complete theoretical training will be provided. The major topics covered in the training are Solar pump components, site and pump selection process, installation, operation and maintenance. Meritorious students from the introductory workshop would be provided full scholarship. Depending on the Covid-19 situations, advanced training including on-hand practical demonstration would be conducted at the residential training facility of SwitchON at Nadia and Bankura. Both the online and offline training will be conducted by certified trainers on solar technologies.

SwitchON has received an overwhelming response for the training from across the country. Students from colleges like Government ITI College, Indpur, Bankura and Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar Polytechnic, Jhargram have applied for the programme. The applications for the workshop are open and participants can register.
