#MoveForEarth Cycle Yatra Spurs Climate Action & Sustainable Practices in Giridih

Giridih, January 7, 2024As part of the Move the Earth Initiative, the Jharkhand leg of the Cycle Yatra by SwitchON Foundation which commenced on January 4, 2024, from Olihantu reached Giridih today. Under the initiative, efforts were made to highlight the various solutions that could be taken up towards equipping communities with key tools, resources, new age skills and creating a networked ecosystem for them to be the ambassadors of change.

At Govt Middle School Taratand ,Giridih, women folk and children gathered to celebrate and inspire climate action. A group discussion was organized in collaboration with Jago Foundation, with the women SHGs where 50 members participated. Conversations revolved around the importance of segregating waste at source, composting organic waste, and promoting recycling initiatives. These discussions not only highlighted the women’s collective determination to create cleaner environments but also showcased their potential as change agents within their communities. Mukhiya of Taratand Smt. Yashoda Devi graced the occasion. The exchange of knowledge and collaborative spirit demonstrated during the discussion underscored the significance of empowering women in driving sustainable waste management practices at the grassroots level. Mr. Jaju also interacted with a group of youth and children where they discussed the effect of  air pollution on health and environment and what steps can be taken to tackle the issue. 

Mr Vinay Jaju, Co-Founder of SwitchON Foundation said “During the journey I am connecting with the farmers, women, youth and children of the areas to address the issues of clean air, waste management and other sustainability issues.” He further added, “Move for Earth is dedicated to the youth and farmers of our nation and aims to inspire them to take up action for this fragile Earth”.  

In another event at Meer Hotel, an interaction with Child Right NGOs and Children’s  Committee for Clean Air formed by Jago Foundation on the critical impact of air pollution on children’s health and well-being was discussed at large. The committee emphasized the need for comprehensive policies that prioritize clean air to safeguard children’s rights to health and a safe environment. They explored collaborative efforts to advocate for stronger regulations, public awareness campaigns, and the integration of child-centric perspectives into clean air initiatives. The overarching goal was to ensure a healthier and safer environment for children.

Smt. Muniya Devi, Zila Parishad Adhyaksh, Giridih said, “There is an urgent need for awareness among masses on climate action and my best wishes to SwitchON Foundation on the launch of this event. This Climate ride will definitely support sustainability and active participation of masses for environmental causes.”

Mr. Baidnath Mahato, Secretary, Jago Foundation said, “We are committed to promote a greener ecosystem and greener environment as we congratulate SwitchON Foundation for taking up this great initiative for the environment and awareness generation.”

The cycle Yatra moved forward to Saptar Panchayat from Giridih where an interaction with the local farmers was conducted engaging the local farmers in an insightful session on sustainable farming practices, emphasizing the benefits of solar pump irrigation for efficient water use.  The advantages of drip irrigation in conserving water and optimizing crop yields was also discussed. farming techniques like the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) technique, highlighting its potential to enhance rice productivity with reduced inputs was also discussed. The farmers were encouraged to adopt these methods for a more eco-friendly and economically viable agricultural approach.

The cycle yatra, which started from Olihantu, Khunti will cover around 500 kms in Jharkhand passing through Ranchi, Ormanjhi, Ramgarh, Bokaro, Phusro, Dhanbad, Giridih, Madhupur, Deogarh, Jarmundi and culminating in Dumka on January 9, 2024.

The main motto of the ‘Move for Earth’ movement is to celebrate and inspire Climate Action with a purpose to build a smarter and brighter future for ourselves, our children, our farmers and life on earth. The whole movement would cover cycling over 4,000 km across different states in East India engaging Farmers, Youth, Government, Financiers, Technologists and Civil Society Organizations through its journey, and offer solutions to community-specific issues related to water, soil, energy and clean air, that are directly impacting the livelihood and health of citizens.
