COVID-19 has posed an unparalleled health crisis to global health systems. Coupled with that, air pollution related respiratory diseases has further degraded an already compromised health system. In the Eastern state of Bengal, almost 85% of diseases are respiratory diseases which have outnumbered other diseases. A recent Lancet report revealed that Bengal has seen about 11 times more air pollution related deaths in the year 2019 as compared to COVID-19 deaths in 2020.

On the occasion of World Health Day, SwitchON Foundation has released a video with advisories and information issued from city’s eminent doctors to better sensitize citizens on air pollution related health issues. The video details key facts about respiratory and other health diseases associated with rising pollution levels in the State and lays out precautionary measures that we as individuals can take. This World Health Day, let’s pledge to take necessary precautions while we still can and prevent it from emerging as the next big health emergency after COVID-19.
